STREAM BANK RESTORATION

This project was designed by FTH&C, Contracted by Lyonnias Inc (for whom I was the construction manager), and installed by P.A.T Landscape Construction and Restoration.

This project consisted of vegetative geogrid wall, rock riffles, rock spurs and live staking.

BEFORE PICTURE OF TREES BEING ERODED BY INCREASED RUNOFF DUE TO UPSTREAM DEVELOPMENT. WE WILL BUILD VEGETATIVE GEOGRID WALLS TO PROTECT IT.

THE FIRST STEP IN INSTALLING VEGETATIVE GEOGRID IS TO EXCAVATE FOR THE BASE STONE MATERIAL. 

THE NEXT STEP IS TO BUILD TWO LAYERS OF STONE WRAPPED IN GEOGRID MATERIAL; ALL THIS IS TO BE BELOW THE STREAM BED AND BE USED TO SUPPORT THE WALL.

THE NEXT STEP IS TO CREATE LAYERS OF TOPSOIL WRAPPED IN GEOGRID MATERIAL AND EROSION CONTROL MATTING.

TOPSOIL IS CAREFULLY PLACED BETWEEN ALL GAPS IN ROOTS. THE OUTSIDE HAS EROSION CONTROL MATTING AND IS SEEDED WITH NATIVE SEED.

THESE LAYERS ARE COMPACTED TO PREVENT ANY SETTLING.

THIS PICTURE SHOWS TWO COMPLETED LAYERS ON TOP OF TWO LAYERS OF STONE BASE.

THIS IS A FINISHED PICTURE OF A COMPLETED WALL. THE TREES IN THE BACKGROUND ARE THE SAME AS IN THE FIRST PICTURE.

THIS IS A PICTURE OF THE SAME WALL AS ABOVE LATER IN THE FALL WITH SOME OF THE VEGETATION STARTING TO GROW.

THIS IS A PICTURE OF SAME TREES A YEAR LATER.

ROCK RIFFLES WERE USED TO SLOW DOWN THE WATER BY CREATING A DAM AND DIRECTING THE FLOW OF THE WATER TOWARDS THE CENTER OF THE STREAM.

THIS IS A PICTURE OF A RIFFLE WITH WATER. THE WATER ON THE UPSTREAM SIDE POOLS AND ALLOWS SILT TO SETTLE OUT OF THE WATER.

ROCK SPURS WERE ALSO USED TO DIRECT THE FLOW OF THE WATER AROUND SHARP CURVES OF THE STREAM.

IN SOME LOCATIONS LIVE STAKING WAS USED. THESE STAKES WILL EVENTUALLY GROW AND THE ROOTS OF THE PLANTS WILL HELP TO STABILIZE THE BANKS OF THE STREAM.

IN THIS LOCATION WE REDIRECTED THE STREAM TO REMOVE A SHARP CURVE.
